Music for Medicine (KU Medlife Benefit)

Kansas Union (Ballroom) at the University of Kansas , 1301 Jayhawk Blvd, Lawrence, KS

Music for Medicine is a benefit for Medlife.

MedLife is a medical mission trip based, international organization that provides "Medicine, Education and Development to Low Income Families Everywhere". Members of MedLife have the opportunity to go on volunteer trips to countries such as Tanzania, India, Peru and Ecuador to set up mobile health care clinics to distribute medicine and healthcare to those that rarely receive it, build staircases for children to get to school, and provide a number of other services to impoverished communities.

MedLife's key agenda is sustainable change, in which the power to make that change is placed directly in the hands of the people who need it. MedLife is largely lead by local people in the cities it serves. They hold meetings with impoverished communities to see what their greatest need is, and then encourage the community to take part in bringing that need to their area. For an example, MedLife asks a community to loan their furniture to set up mobile clinics and asks for a community's help in building a staircase. This empowers the community and this approach is key to breaking the cycle of poverty. It is of no help to impoverished people to give them things we 'think' they need. Listening to a community and giving them what will truly benefit them most is so much more beneficial and lasting.
